Zig Zag Hemming

Zigzag hemming is a type of sewing technique where the stitch is actually zigzagged along the material edges with a single stitch going in once direction and another stitch to a different direction. This manner of hemming is used in the prevention of raveling and also for decorative purposes. Zigzag hemming is also used when you want to conceal the stitch rows from the finished material. For instance, skirts, dresses and window hangings are often hemmed at the bottom with a zigzag hem. There are certain fabrics that require zigzag hems. Lightweight and sheer fabrics like voile and organza look better without heavy stitch rows on them.

A simple zigzag hem is something that is not commonly used in stretchy cloth. This kind requires three straight and one zigzag stitch repeated on an entire hem length. The straight ones usually go through the back layer of the fabric and the zigzag stitch is the only one that goes through the fabric's front layer.

Zigzag hemming can be done in a sewing machine or by hand. This type of stitch can be very tricky when done in the machine since the seamstress needs to have a good control over the machine. There are sewing machines that feature only one kind of blind hem while others are programmed for both types.
