Mushroom Pleating

The main purpose of pleats is to fit a garment in such a way that it draws closer over smaller areas in the body (such as the waist) while it becomes larger over wider areas in the body (e.g. breast, hips). Pleats are usually easy and convenient to make. Pleating is a sewing technique that many find easy to master and makes a garment or piece of fabric look so much better.

Mushroom pleating on the other hand, is a type of pleating technique that is close and delicate, like that of the underside of a certain mushroom cap. Mushroom pleats are perhaps the least common pleat of table skirt styles. The mushroom pleat design often imitates the underside of a mushroom top with many tight, vertical and thin pleats on it. Mushroom pleats are often used in lampshade designs. You can often see mushroom pleated lamps sold in home depots that vary in size, shape and color.

Mushroom pleats can also be seen in kilts, skirts and dresses. There are various mushroom pleated skirts that add fullness in the waist and hip area and at the same time give more freedom of movement for the wearer. You can now sway to the tunes floating from mushroom pleats on some skirts. Kick pleats can also be placed near the skirt hems for the wearer to walk comfortably along the road while maintaining a narrow style. Modern kilts can also be made with either knife or box pleats.

Mushroom pleating is also common in table skirting. It is used to cover up a table's lets and create extra and unseen storage space. Some of the other types of pleats used in table skirting are box pleats and shirred pleats.
